Students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia benefit from using Kurzweil 3000-firefly. But how do you support your students who have physical disabilities? Using the keyboard shortcuts in Kurzweil 3000-firefly and IntelliKeys with custom overlays from Overlay Maker, your most challenged students can read the same content as their peers and gain access to the reading, writing, studying skills, and test taking tools in Kurzweil 3000-firefly.
Many of you joined the webinar we held on this topic in September. If you missed the webinar, you can listen to the on-demand version now.
Here are some of the questions that were asked during the webinar and we thought would be helpful to you, too:
Q. We have IntelliTools Overlay Maker for IntelliKeys from years ago. After watching this webinar and seeing how easy it is to give access to Kurzweil 3000-firefly using IntelliKeys, we will want to install this alternative keyboard. Are there updates in order for us to get the new icons shown in the webinar?
A. If you own Overlay Maker 3 you can download the updater from the IntelliTools Website Download Section.
Q. Are there new voices in Kurzweil 3000-firefly?
A. The Julie and Paul voices sound more natural and are easy to listen to. They have been well received.
Q. How do I update to the latest version of Kurzweil 3000-firefly?
A. If you own the web license version of Kurzweil 3000, you can update from within Kurzweil 3000 by choosing Online/Updates in the menu. Kurzweil 3000 will check for new updates and download automatically. Because firefly and the firefly iPad app are web-based, both products are updated without any action on your part.
Q. Do you recommend using Kurzweil 3000-firefly for all students or just for those students who need assistive technology?
A. We have seen this successfully used by all students! It has become an invaluable teaching tool for teachers and the writing and reading supports enhance the productivity of all students. It is currently being used in high schools and many colleges throughout the world! Why wait for a student to struggle when they can excel with tools that support the common core standards?
Q. Regarding firefly, how much does it cost and what do you need to use it?
A. firefly is free to any Kurzweil 3000 user who owns the web license version. If you’re not sure if you have the web license version, you can contact our sales department to learn more at firstname.lastname@example.org.
